Mahaprasad prices at Puri Jagannath temple to be regulated soon

The price of the Abadha Mahaprasad at Jagannath temple in Puri will be regulated soon, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said on Thursday.

According to sources, this comes in response to the temple administration (SJTA)’s previous initiative to issue a rate chart. In line with the recent emphasis on using pure ghee in the preparation of Mahaprasad, discussions are presently focused on addressing the associated challenges to ensure stable and affordable pricing for devotees.

By regulating prices, the temple authorities aim to alleviate the purchasing difficulties faced by devotees. “A decision will be taken in this regard soon,” the Law Minister asserted.

“We will initiate the price regulation process very soon and the temple administration has already voiced for the rate chart of Mahaprasad. After the use of ‘pure ghee’ was insisted, some cost-related issues surfaced,” Law Minister Harichandan said mediapersons.

“The preparation cost and selling price are to be balanced so that the devotees would not face any difficulty in buying Mahaprasad. We are seriously looking into the matter and a final call in this regard will be taken in the near future,” the Law Minister added.

Worth mentioning, before the start of Holy ‘Kartika’ month, the prices of Mahaprasad and other prasads had gone up threefold causing severe inconvenience to devotees.

Amid the recent row over adulteration in laddus at Tirupati temple, the Odisha government and Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) have decided to have a regular quality check mechanism at Puri Srimandir, especially on the use of ghee to prepare Mahaprasad.
