Following torrential rain in the upper catchment area in Chhattisgarh and heavy rainfall in Khairamal, Banki, Sonepur and Nayagarh, the water level of Mahanadi will rise further, informed Odisha Engineer-in-Chief Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty on Wednesday.
Considering the situation, Mohanty has also issued a warning for flashflood in the Mahanadi system.
As per reports, the water level of Hirakud dam now stands at 610 ft while over 2 lakh cusecs of water is entering the reservoir against the outflow of 2.5 lakh cusecs.
The Water Resource Department has called for a high-level meeting at 4 pm today. Discussions will be held regarding the opening of gates in Hirakud in the meeting.
Around four lakh cusecs water is currently flowing through Mundali and that is likely to increase up to 6 lakh cusecs soon.
“Due to heavy rain in the upper catchment area, the water level in Mahanadi will rise further. We have taken initial stock of the situation. A special committee meeting will be held today to discuss about the inflow and outflow of water in Hirakud. We will also evaluate the situation after getting the data about the amount of rainfall in different places,” said Engineer-in-Chief Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty.
