Several parts of Odisha are experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall activities under the influence of a low pressure area since Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday informed that Koraput town recorded highest 168 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
As per IMD, two places in Odisha recorded extremely heavy rainfall while 19 places recorded heavy rainfall activities in the past 24 hours. Several low-lying areas also remained waterlogged following the low pressure induced rainfall.
The Engineering-in-chief of Water Resources Department, Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty today informed that at present there is no flood threat for Odisha. Currently excess water from Hirakud dam is being released through two gates and the water-level is constantly registering a drop, he said.
As per the latest data, there is an inflow of 1 lakh cusecs of water into Hirakud while the outflow stands at 70,000- 80,000 cusecs. According to Mohanty, the status of Hirakud dam is good and at present, no decision has been taken on closing down one more gate of the dam.
“A final decision in this regard will be taken after a detailed review as there is a forecast of rainfall in the upper catchment areas and downstream areas tomorrow,” Mohanty added.
