Amid ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh and possible infiltration bid into Odisha territory, the residents of Basudevpur in Bhadrak district detained seven persons suspecting them to be Bangladeshi nationals on Sunday.
According to sources, suspicion among the locals grew after they found six unknown persons de-boarding an auto-rickshaw near Atal Bihari High School.
Suspecting their movement, the locals intercepted them and reportedly found them to be Bangladeshis. Subsequently, the locals informed Basudebpur police about the matter and the suspects were detained by the cops.
“When we asked them about their nationality, they said they are from Bangladesh. However, they do not have any valid identity card issued by the government. They have been detained by the police,” said Bijay Bandha, a local resident.
In another incident, another suspected Bangladeshi national has been detained from Nalabanka chhak under Nayakanidihi police limits. He was also handed over to the police.
“The man told us that he is from Bangladesh. A knife, a blanket and a mosquito net were recovered from him. He has been picked up by the police after we informed them about the incident,” said Dinabandhu Behera, another local.
Meanwhile, the coastal and marine police have been asked to remain alert given possible infiltration bid by Bangladeshi nationals into Odisha territory. As per the rule, the marine police have been directed to intensify patrolling activities in the sea up to five nautical miles.
