A school in tribal dominated Malkangiri district on Friday nicely demonstrated how learning though play is really helpful.
A State Bank of India’s branch was set up on the premises of Jabanpalli Upper Primary School under Kalimela block. However, the entire activities of the branch were performed by none other than the students. There was a bank manger, other staff, a bank mitra, a peon and a security guard as well.
While the bank manager could be seen listening to customers’ complaints, the bank mitra was busy telling visitors how to create pass books, how to deposit and withdraw money and what is Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana.
The objective behind this was to make children aware of a bank.

“In our district, most people are tribals who don’t know how to calculate. So, this bank has been set up to teach them,” said Jayant Mandal, a student.
A hospital was also set up on the school premises where students donned the hats of doctors, nurses and patients.
Activities like a doctor sometimes taking the readings of blood pressure of a patient and sometimes trying to find out heartbeats with the help of a stethoscope were carried out by the students.
There was a police station, agriculture and panchayat office as well and all of them were operated by the students.
“I came to Jabanpalli High School to see how a bank, a hospital, a police station functions. I have learnt a lot of things,” said a girl student.
Informing about the objective behind such initiative, Nabakishore Mallik, headmaster of the school, said, “When a parent is asked to open a bank account in his child’s name, he takes a month. It is because he doesn’t know whom he should go to, where accounts are opened and what the procedures are. So he depends on others for this.”
‘Similarly, we have set up an mock hospital. We have done this because our students don’t know when they visit a hospital where they should go first and where they get their names registered,” said Mallik.
The mock bank, hospital, police station and other offices were set up as a part of an exhibition.
