A video showing a lady constable assaulting a truck driver has gone viral, triggering widespread outrage. The incident reportedly occurred at Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district.
The purported video, showing the conduct of the official, has drawn sharp criticisms from the public who demanded action against the constable.
Bribery Allegations Surface
As per the allegations, a staff member from the transport department stopped a truck driver and demanded money. When the driver refused, he was allegedly slapped and beaten.
A constable identified as Bano Begum has been accused of physically assaulting the driver. The video of the incident is now circulating widely on social media.
Meanwhile, police have registered cases from both parties involved.
Driver Claims Repeated Harassment
The driver, Indra Kumar Yadav, alleged that the lady constable demanded Rs 15,000 from him. Upon his refusal, she slapped him. Yadav claimed this was not the first such incident, he was subjected to similar harassment by officials when he previously travelled to Bhawanipatna, but due to lack of evidence, no action could be taken.
This time, however, both the driver and his helper were prepared and secretly recorded the constable as she allegedly assaulted him for denying the bribe.
CM’s Guidelines Flouted
The video has sparked concerns as it appears to contradict the directives recently issued by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. The CM had urged police personnel to remain efficient in their duties, assist the public, and maintain proper conduct.
CM Majhi had also directed them to follow rules and act lawfully. The actions seen in the viral video stand in stark contrast to this vision.
No Action Despite Viral Video
Despite the video being in circulation for five days, no action has allegedly been taken against the constable. In response to the allegations, the constable has also filed a counter-complaint against the truck driver.
Welfare Measures in Question
The Odisha government has introduced several measures to support truck drivers, including the establishment of rest houses. The current incident, however, raises questions about the enforcement and monitoring of such welfare initiatives.
