Scores of junior and senior resident doctors of various hospitals in Odisha joined the nationwide withdrawal of services to seek justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim. The doctors in Odisha have extended support to the Indian Medical Association which called for a 24-hour withdrawal of services across the country and across public and private hospitals on Friday.
Burla VIMSAR junior doctors have launched a cease work while the PG doctors are carrying out their duties in emergency services. However, OPD services have been hit here.
“The entire nation is in shock over the Kolkata incident. In view of patient care, we are only working for emergency services while OPD, IPD, elective OTs and academic activities have been boycotted,” said a junior doctor.
Another doctor said, “Emergency services in ICU, Labour room, casualty are on but we have distanced ourselves from ward duties. If doctors are not safe, how can they discharge their duties when they are subjected to such incidents at workplace?”
Demands Of Doctors
“We want justice as soon as possible. Today, it happened in Kolkata and such incidents can happen in other parts of the country and hence, we want implementation of the Central Protection Act which protects doctors against heinous crimes and violence,” said another agitating doctor.
In AIIMS Bhubaneswar also, the situation was no different as nearly 500 junior and senior resident doctors have launched a cease work strike from today. Usually, AIIMS Bhubaneswar registers an inflow of 4000 patients in outpatient departments on a daily basis. Now the patients are facing problems due to the cease work agitation.
“We understand that patients might suffer due to the stoppage of outdoor services. But incidents of assault and abuse and now rape on duty hours are also being reported. Hence, we want the Central Protection Act and a detailed probe into the Kolkata incident,” said a protesting doctor.
Reportedly, healthcare services at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, have also been affected due to the protest by doctors.
