A final year postgraduate student of the psychiatric department of the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has accused a professor of his department of subjecting him to mental harassment on a regular basis.

Drawing the line at their son’s unpleasant experience, the parents of Debibrata Acharya have written letters to the Chief Minister, the Director of Health Services, the Director of Medical Education and Training, DGP and the Dean and Principal of the said institution, informing them how Professor Jayaprakash Russell Ravan has been harassing their son mentally.

As per the allegations of Debibrata, Professor Ravan has been making him do his personal work like picking and dropping him off at his clinic and bringing food from restaurants at night since day one of his admission. The professor has also threatened him to fail in examinations.

When things crossed a limit, Debibrata’s parents drew the attention of the Chief Minister, the Director of Health Services, the Director of Medical Education and Training, DGP and the Dean and Principal of the said institution to how their son was being tortured mentally.

‘It is normal in the life of a PG student. But something extra was happening to me, hampering my studies, sleep, peace of mind and rest. Because of his threats, I stopped stepping out of my room. He was accusing me without any rhyme and reason,” said Debibrata.

Debibrata’s mother Dr Umarani Acharya said, “He is so afraid that he doesn’t want to continue his studies there. We are afraid he may take some wrong steps there. So, what we want is that he should at least stay with us.”

On the other hand, Professor Jayaprakash Russell Ravan refuted the allegations levelled against him.

“In anger, once I wrote something to him in WhatsApp. But that doesn’t mean that I will fail him. As many as ten PG batches have passed under me, but I have not failed anyone. Rather I help students who are in trouble. However, the misunderstanding between us has been sorted out,” said Professor Ravan.
