Protesters burn the effigy of Achyuta Samanta
Members of Congress Minority Cell staged a protest in front of the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, demanding justice for the deceased Nepali girl who allegedly committed suicide. They also demanded the arrest of founder and former BJD MP Achyuta Samanta.
As per reports, some of the protestors allegedly tried to enter the University premises. Following the development, they had a scuffle with the police who tried to prevent them from entering the varsity premises.
Tension prevails
Subsequently, tension prevailed in the area as the police detained some of the protestors. Traffic in the area was halted for an hour and hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road due to the protest. As per the latest report, normalcy has returned in the area following intervention by the police.
The protestors demanded immediate justice for the victim as the investigation into the incident has reportedly made no headway even after 20 days. Many other organisations have also held protests demanding immediate justice for the deceased girl and the arrest of Achyuta Samanta. They also burnt the effigy of Samanta.

NHRC order
Notably, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Director General (Investigation) to form a team and conduct a probe into the alleged suicide of the Nepali student at KIIT University. The NHRC has also directed the official to submit the investigation report by March 10.
Twenty-year-old Nepalese girl Prakriti Lamsal’s body was recovered from her hostel room on February 16, in the afternoon, when KIIT was celebrating its foundation day.
