Incessant rainfall has triggered a sharp rise in the water level of the Brahmani River, submerging the Pattamundai-Rajnagar main road in Odisha’s Kendrapara district and disrupting daily life.
Water, measuring around two to three feet deep, is currently flowing over the road, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. As a result, communication between several panchayats of Pattamundai block and the outside world has been completely cut off.
According to sources, many agricultural fields are submerged, raising fears of crop loss. The situation has been further worsened by the presence of crocodiles in the Brahmani River, which has left villagers anxious about wading through flooded stretches. People are avoiding entering the water, fearing crocodile attacks.
Education has also taken a hit. School teachers and students have been unable to reach their schools, with many stranded on flooded roads. Classes in affected areas have been severely impacted.
“I don’t know how to swim, and there is a fear of crocodile attack too. It seems impossible for me to reach school. I don’t know how to reach school,” said a teacher from Pattamundai.
Another resident of Pattamundai said, “Three panchayats- Srirampur, Damarpur and Balabhadrapur have been cut off from the mainland after an increase in water level of Brahmani river. A PDS rice-laden truck overturned yesterday. The district administration is yet to make any arrangements.”
