An unusual marital resolution has emerged from the village of Puintala in the Bolangir district, where an old love affair led to an unexpected marital arrangement directed by a local 'kangaroo court'.

This verdict has sparked debate about traditional conflict resolution and the involvement of local authorities.

As per reports, Sudhir Bag from Bileisarda village wed a local woman in April 2024. By the following year, the woman was five months pregnant when her former lover, Alok Salma from Dunguripali area in Sonepur district, re-entered her life.

'Kangaroo Court' Decision

Upon discovering this past relationship, village elders reportedly convened an unofficial tribunal, colloquially known as a 'kangaroo court'. Their decision was that the woman should marry her former lover, Alok.

Consequently, under the direction of this 'kangaroo court', a wedding was held in the village temple. Alok was allegedly beaten up and forcefully married with the woman. Subsequently, both were sent to Dunguripali.

"My wife had a love affair with another person (Alok) and both were talking with each other. Though I asked my wife to stop talking with him, she didn't obey me. Even that person came to our house and we halted him," said Sudhir Bag.

"The marriage was conducted in our village temple. We had informed the police about the development and the security personnel were present during the marriage," said Bileisarda Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Sushant Chhatria.

"After taking opinions of all, the remarriage was decided and it was conducted at the temple," said Nanda Kishore Panda, the priest of the temple.

Legal and Ethical Queries

This unconventional marriage resolution raises serious questions regarding its legality and the ethical implications for those involved, especially in light of cultural norms and the potential coercion of the individuals. The feelings of the couple about their imposed union remain opaque, as do the potential pressures from the informal court.

"The kangaroo court in the village decided to force the marriage on us. Though the police were present there, they remained silent," said Alok Salma.

"The villagers forced us to marry. I need justice," said the woman.

Police Inaction

Despite law enforcement officers from Puinitala being present at the event, there was no intervention, highlighting concerns over their role in ensuring justice and protecting individuals in such scenarios.

The Bolangir Sadar police have yet to issue a formal statement over the matter. This silence leaves uncertainties surrounding the impact of such extrajudicial decisions on social norms and the future well-being of those affected, particularly the unborn child's legal and social identity.
