Thunderstorms with lightning and rain accompanied by gusty winds are expected today in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, informed sources from the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Regional office.
As per the Nowcast Warning issued by the met office, “Severe Thunderstorm with hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 60 – 70 kmph, lightning, moderate to intense spell of rain likely to affect some parts of districts of Koraput, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Balasore and Ganjam within the next couple of hours.”
"Under its impact, damage to thatched huts, minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches, water logging in low-lying areas, some damage to standing crops, banana, papaya trees, and orchards may occur," the Bhubaneswar regional meteorological centre further warned.
IMD has also advised people to take shelter in pukka structures and avoid taking shelter under trees. People have also been warned to suspend farming activities temporarily and move away from electric poles and wires.
Moderate Thunderstorm warning
Meanwhile, a warning has also been issued for moderate thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and light to moderate rainfall in some parts of the districts like Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Bolangir, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Boudh within the next two to three hours.
Orange warning
IMD has predicted that one or two places in Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Ganjam, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda may witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph on Saturday afternoon or evening. Orange warning has been issued to these districts.
Yellow warning has been issued to Kalahandi, Dhenkanal, Baragarh, Sambalpur, Kandhamal, Deogarh, Bolangir, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh and Malkangiri.
One or two places in these districts may experience moderate thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching up to 30-50 kmh on tomorrow afternoon or evening.
