Justice at doorstep: CM Mohan Majhi vows to provide justice to citizens at their homes
Odisha CM Mohan Majhi on Thursday said that his government is not only committed to the cause of justice but also wants to provide justice at the doorstep of the people in the state. Attending a programme at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, Majhi announced that his government is also committed to provide accessible and efficient police services to citizens at their homes.
“From now on, no police station can refuse to register an FIR. Victims do not need to personally visit the police station to lodge an FIR. The police are bound to lodge an FIR even if they are in the jurisdiction or not. This will be called ‘Zero FIR’ and will be sent to the respective police station for further due process,” informed CM Mohan Majhi.
“Moreover, the police personnel cannot call a handicapped person, a minor below 15 years of age or those above 60 to the police station, except in unavoidable circumstances. POCSO cases should be solved within 60 days or 2 months,” the CM added.
The CM also rapped the previous government for the lowest conviction rate in crime against women and girl children.
“As per the NCRB report, Odisha has just a 9.3% conviction rate in crimes against women and the lowest compared to other states. Our government is taking this seriously. If needed, we will set up special courts and up the conviction rates,” the CM announced.
Likewise, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan who was also present at the meeting said, “In an effort to provide justice at doorstep, this will play a crucial role. We also have approved the construction of six new ‘Gram Nyayalayas (rural courts)’ that will serve as mediation and will go a long way in reducing the load on the judicial system. Moreover, a law commission will be formed soon and all the unwanted laws will also be discarded in Odisha.”
