The people living in the Bolani S section, Kiriburu hilltop under Barbil range of Keonjhar are spending sleepless nights as elephants have unleashed a reign of terror in the locality over the last few days.

On Wednesday night, a tusker strayed into Dalmia hatting and caused massive destruction. It pulled down four houses and devoured rice stored there. It further went on a rampage, destroying the crops under its feet. 

On being informed, a team from the Forest Department reached the spot and launched an operation to drive away the elephant. Later they succeeded in their attempt.

Meanwhile, the Forest Department has alerted the villagers about a herd of eight elephants camping in the areas bordering Jharkhand. The Forest Department is creating awareness among the villagers through a public address system on how to protect their life, property, and crops.

Incidents of man-elephant conflicts are being reported every now and then. Earlier on February 10, an elderly man, identified as Chaitanya Bhoi, 75, was trampled to death by a rampaging wild elephant at Khaerpada village under Sambalpur Sadar Forest Range.
