ISKCON’s ‘untimely’ Rath Yatra plan in London sparks fresh controversy, Puri Srimandir servitors dem
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is once again at the centre of controversy for allegedly disregarding traditional norms associated with the sacred Rath Yatra. Reports have stated that the organisation is set to conduct an ‘untimely’ Rath Yatra in London tomorrow (May 18), drawing widespread criticism from religious leaders in Puri.
ISKCON has publicised the event online, inviting devotees of Lord Jagannath and followers of the Hare Krishna movement to participate.
The program details mention that the event will include cultural events, devotional kirtans, yoga sessions, and a special appearance by YouTuber Govind Krishna Das, who has been announced as an independent guest.
Puri Srimandir Servitors Express Deep Displeasure
The announcement has not gone down well with traditional servitors sebayats at the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
Senior servitor Hajuri Krushnachandra Khuntia voiced strong objections, stating that ISKCON has repeatedly violated the spiritual norms of Jagannath worship.
“Rath Yatra is not just a festival but a sacred tradition deeply rooted in centuries of ritual and custom. The dates of the Rath Yatra, Snan Purnima, and other festivities are to be observed on a decided day. However, ISKCON has repeatedly violated these dates and has not responded to our letters,” he said.

Demand for Government Intervention
The servitors have urged both the state and central governments to immediately intervene and halt ISKCON’s unauthorised celebrations. According to them, such events not only misrepresent the sanctity of the Ratha Yatra but also mislead global devotees about the core traditions of Jagannath worship.
Misinformation and Wrong Poster Add to Anger
Adding fuel to the fire is ISKCON’s alleged release of inaccurate images of the deities.
Reports claim that in the promotional materials, Lord Jagannath’s image has been wrongly placed on Lord Balabhadra’s Taladhwaja chariot, and similarly, images of Devi Subhadra have appeared on Jagannath’s Nandighosha.
