Cold wave conditions returned to Odisha at the start of the New Year, with an intense cold wave gripping several parts of the state. Temperatures slipped sharply yesterday night and intense cold along with dense fog prevailed over many places including the capital city of Bhubaneswar.
As per the latest predictions by the weather office, a further drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is expected in the next 24 hours.
Dr Sanjeev Dwivedi of the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Regional Centre stated that the current weather conditions are due to cold winds entering the state from the north and the northwest. Further, he also said that the minimum temperature is likely to drop below 10 degrees Celsius in the coming two days across many places in Odisha.
As such, following a brief spike in temperature owing to subsequent low-pressure systems in December, the return of the cold wave suddenly threw lives out of gear with no immediate respite in sight as the weather department’s forecast expects this intense cold to last for at least the next 4 days.
On New Year’s Eve, Jharsuguda recorded the lowest temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius among cities while G. Udayagiri shivered at 6.2 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest temperature among hill stations in Odisha.
