Amidst the ongoing din in the Odisha Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Tuesday demanded arrest of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik. The demand for arrest has been made over the indiscipline during Odisha Governor Raghubar Das’ address in the House.
Mahaling said that the rules of the House have been breached by the LoP.
Minister of State for Sports and Youth Services Department, Suryabanshi Suraj said, “Rules clearly state that under no circumstances any kind of indiscipline will be tolerated during the President or Governor’s address. Whatever happened during the Governor’s address was unfortunate, and it was not expected from a responsible Opposition.”
Suraj further said, “The statements of the Parliamentary Affairs Minister that there is a need to take action against the Leader of Opposition, is not something that he has said on his own rather it is clearly mentioned in the Parliament procedures.”
Responding to the statements of the BJP leaders, BJD MLA Arun Sahoo termed the demand laughable and said that such comments show their (BJP) lack of experience. "I have never seen anyone getting arrested in any Assembly or Parliament proceedings. The BJP should refrain from making such statements...,” he said.
“The BJP is new to power and they have not much knowledge about the rules to ensure proper functioning of the Assembly and that's why a business advisory committee is yet to be set up by the ruling party,” Sahoo added.
