Once again proving that they are there during times of need, the Indian Coast Guard successfully saved 11 lives in a daring Search and Rescue (SAR) operation.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Chennai had received a distress email from Indian Flag Merchant Vessel ITT Puma on August 25. Subsequently, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Regional Headquarters, Kolkata swiftly pressed two ICG vessels and one Donier aircraft for the search and rescue operation.
The sunken vessel was a cargo ship and had departed from Kolkata on August 24 and was en route to Port Blair. The ship was manned by 14 Indian National crew. Sources said that the cargo ship lost its stability due to inclement weather.
The survivors were raising distress signals. Later, 11 of the survivors were rescued and brought to Paradip harbour by ICGS Sarang and ICG Amogh on Tuesday. The search for the missing three more crew members is underway.
