Heavy rains on Saturday washed away a key temporary road built over the Bansajuria stream in Keonjhar district’s Telkoi block, severing the main connectivity between Jagamohanpur and Telkoi.
The incident has caused significant transportation disruptions, especially for larger vehicles, as the region reels under continued monsoon pressure, according to reports.
Sources also added that a new bridge is currently under construction over the Bansajuria stream. To maintain traffic during the construction period, a temporary bypass was created to facilitate daily movement.
However, intense rainfall and strong stream currents led to the complete erosion of the makeshift road, leaving the local population cut off from regular access to the block headquarters.
Small Vehicles Diverted, Heavy Transport Halted
In the aftermath of the washout, light vehicles are being redirected through an alternative route via Chamunda, which is narrow and not suited for heavy or commercial transport. Movement of buses, trucks, and essential supply vehicles was suspended due to the inaccessibility of the primary link and is yet to be restored.
Reports stated that the Public Works Department (PWD) has begun urgent efforts to restore traffic, but there is no official word yet on when normal vehicular movement will resume. Authorities said the restoration work is being hindered by continued rainfall and high water levels in the stream.
Residents in surrounding areas are expressing growing concern, especially those requiring access to healthcare and markets in Telkoi. Local traders also reported disruption in supply chains due to the route closure.
Orange Alert Issued as Monsoon Strengthens
The disruption comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the weekend.
Weather reports have warned that some areas in these districts may witness thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of up to 40 km/h.
