AIIMS-Bhubaneswar crossed another milestone by successfully removing a 7-kg tumour through a critical surgery on the scalp of a patient from West Bengal.
As per reports, a team of doctors at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar successfully removed the Synovial sarcoma tumour (a rare and aggressive malignant tumour that forms in soft tissues).
51-year-old Rabindra Bisui had a small tumour on his head 25 years ago, but it rapidly started growing seven months back, making it difficult for him to move and do his usual work.
Though Rabindra consulted doctors at various hospitals in Kolkata and at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, he was disappointed as the tumour had blood vessels all around which involved risk for surgery.
A special team of experts from surgical oncology, neurosurgery, interventional radiology, and anaesthesiology departments was formed.
Initially, the blood vessels from the tumour were contracted through embolyse. The patient was put under 72-hour observation before being taken to the operation theatre. After a marathon 10-hour surgery, the tumour was successfully removed. After two weeks, he recovered and is able to move freely.
Speaking to the media, the patient Rabindra said,“ I am fully well now and feel easy. The doctors saved my life. They are like God.”

Dr Sanjay Giri, head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar said, “The patient from West Bengal had a big tumour on his scalp. The tumour was unusually swollen and removing it from the scalp was risky. After investigations, we came to know that the skull bone had no involvement with the tumour.”
Executive Director of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, Ashutosh Biswas said, "Now you see that the patient is well. There are no post-operative complications. His tumour was as old as 25 years. Over the last six months, it had been rapidly growing. After a biopsy, it was learnt that it was cancerous growth.”
