With a few hours left for the first match of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup between Spain and host India, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a hockey trophy made of rice husk at Sonepur on Friday to extend his support to Indian hockey players.
Popular globally for his sand art, Sudarsan this time chose to create a 4,682 sqft hockey trophy for which he used rice husk of 100 sacks. He considered it a record in itself.
Sudarsan said, “Rice husk can be found at every house in villages. And when it comes to Sonepur district, you can find it in huge quantities. Youth present here observed how we came up with this hockey trophy in just six hours. Village youths should spark the creativity within themselves. All I want to say is that this is the best place to promote creativity through this artwork.”
Sonepur Collector Aboli Sunil Naravane said, “Sonepur is a farmers’ district. It is known for harvesting huge quantity of paddy every year. When we proposed the idea to eminent sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik, he did not disappoint us. He came up with a magnificent mosaic of 4,682 sqft. Importantly, no chemicals have been laced with rice husk for the artwork and it can be reused.”
Aboli also took to Twitter to share Sudarsan’s artwork and captioned it ‘Rice Husk Mosaic by Padmashree’
“As Subarnapur is a paddy abundant district this is how we have decided to celebrate and cheer for team India. Chak de,” read her tweet.
