The scarcity of doctors at government hospitals and health centres is common knowledge. However, what is appalling is that the ward boys and helpdesk employees are now acting as doctors. This was witnessed at Titilagarh sub-divisional hospital in Odisha’s Bolangir district.

Instead of a doctor, a helpdesk boy appointed by a contractual company was seen administering injections to the patients in the hospital. Not just injections, the staff was seen dressing the patients and providing other medical services. The attendant has been identified as Bimal Hati.

This has drawn serious flak from the family members and relatives of the patients. Ironically this has been happening even after a woman patient recently died allegedly after being administered the wrong injection by a doctor.

According to sources, the victim Binodini was pregnant and was admitted to MCH on February 2. However, the next day, the family was told that she had delivered a stillborn baby.

As Binodini’s health deteriorated, the doctor on duty allegedly administered an injection. Family members alleged she instantly died after the injection on February 8. The incident had spread outrage in the hospital premises.

However, the staff seems to have not learnt their lesson and continue to give injections and other medical services to the patients.

No comments could be obtained from the medical authorities in this regard.
