Continuous rainfall for the past three days has caused waterlogging in several areas of Sundargarh district. Villages, particularly in Hemgiri and Lephripara blocks, have been surrounded by water, disrupting movement and leaving residents distressed.
In Lephripara block, the road at Darlipali village has gone underwater, while in Hemgiri block, the Manoharpur–Sarbahal road has been washed away due to the downpour. Locals reported that the NTPC Darlipali Thermal Power Plant has worsened drainage, resulting in knee-high water flowing on roads, into houses and shops, and even over Darlipali bridge.
In Dibrimal, several houses have been damaged in the heavy rains. The local Sarpanch arranged for the evacuation of residents and shifted them to safer areas since Friday night. Low-lying regions have been left completely submerged, and officials cautioned that the strong water flow could sweep people away if they attempt to wade through.
Telkoi Cut Off As Samakoi River Rises
The Telkoi region in Keonjhar district has also been badly affected by heavy rainfall since Friday, which recorded 103 mm of rain. The Samakoi river has risen three feet over the bridge, severing road connectivity from Telkoi block headquarters to 10 panchayats.
Traffic between Telkoi and Talcher, Dhenkanal, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar has been disrupted as water flowed over the bridge. Another bridge near Pitanali village was also reported underwater. An Adarsha School and several other areas have been cut off due to the overflowing streams.
Later, as the water level started receding, some buses and ambulances resumed services. An Additional Tehsildar and police stayed on site near the Samakoi bridge to monitor the situation and warn people about the risks of travelling through swollen waterways.
Administration Monitoring Closely
Authorities in both districts are keeping a close watch on the conditions, with officials deployed at vulnerable spots. The administration has assured that safety measures are being taken to prevent any mishaps as rainfall continues.
The heavy rains, swollen rivers, and submerged roads have left life disrupted across Sundargarh and Telkoi, underlining the strain on infrastructure during the monsoon season.
