Relentless rainfall over the past 48 hours has thrown life out of gear in several districts of Odisha, particularly Malkangiri and Mayurbhanj, where rising water levels and infrastructure damage have prompted administrative alerts and precautionary shutdowns.

Malkangiri Submerged: Roads Cut Off, Bridge Underwater

In Malkangiri district, heavy downpours have led to waterlogging and flooding in several low-lying areas. One of the worst-affected spots is the Kanya Ashram bridge located on the Kalimela-Padia main road, which is now submerged under three feet of water.

Due to the flooding, transportation between Kalimela and Padia has come to a complete halt, severely affecting daily commuters, students, and essential services in the region. The submerged bridge has raised concerns among locals about access to healthcare, ration supplies, and emergency services.

Officials report that all major rivers in the district are witnessing a steady rise in water levels, with fears that further rain could trigger flash floods or isolate entire villages. Emergency teams have been alerted, and rescue units are on standby.

Mayurbhanj on High Alert: Schools Shut, Hostel Students Relocated

Meanwhile, in Mayurbhanj district, the administration has taken pre-emptive action to ensure public safety. Anticipating extremely heavy rainfall in the next 12 hours, the District Collector has ordered the closure of all schools across the district as a safety precaution.
Further, special instructions have been issued to relocate hostel boarders, especially those living in mud-walled (kutcha) hostel buildings, to safer locations. These students are considered highly vulnerable to building collapse or flooding during intense rain spells.

The district administration is also coordinating with local disaster management teams to monitor flood-prone areas, stockpile relief materials, and establish temporary shelters if required.

Authorities On Alert, Public Advised To Stay Indoors

Both districts are now under high alert, with the Meteorological Department warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall. Local administrations have urged residents to:

  • Avoid non-essential travel
  • Stay indoors during heavy rainfall
  • Report waterlogging or structural damage
  • Follow updates from official weather and disaster management sources

Villagers living near riverbanks and low-lying zones have been especially cautioned as the situation remains dynamic.
