Malkangiri residents on Monday morning woke up under 5-6 feet of water after heavy rainfall battered the tribal-dominated district late at night, paralyzing normal life. Neighbourhoods, roads and bridges have literally turned into rivers with severe flooding and water-logging.
The heavy downpour has brought the districts to a halt, with people wading through neck-deep water and seeking shelter in upscale neighbourhoods. Vehicular movements have come to a standstill with National Highway-326 completely submerged underwater.
The district has been cut off from the rest of the world as communication to Koraput and Andhra Pradesh has been completely snapped. With bridges under water, hundreds of trucks and other vehicles on their way to Koraput and Andhra are stuck on roadsides. On the other hand, several houses collapsed in the flood and many others are under the threat of collapse, rendering people homeless.
The situation is grim and similar in the Koraput district. Heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding and water-logging in several parts of the district. Several low-lying areas are under water due to the rise in water level in the Kolab river.
On the other hand, the gates of Jalaput Dam have been opened due to a rise in water level, leading to a flood-like situation in low-lying surrounding areas. While the capacity of the dam is 2,750ft, the water level has risen to 2.749ft now.
Similarly, the water level in Kuralu and Biri rivers is also rising following the incessant rainfall. Locals are in panic mode as the rainfall is yet to stop.
