The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rainfall across Odisha till July 19, with the possibility of intense downpours in the northern and western regions.
On Tuesday, the weather office issued a Yellow Warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda, predicting heavy rain accompanied by gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.
In view of the sustained rainfall, the IMD has cautioned that water levels in some rivers may rise, prompting district administrations to advise residents in low-lying areas to remain alert. The rain activity is expected to be particularly intense in these five districts today, before gradually easing after July 17.
Rainfall Driven by Twin Low-Pressure Systems
The IMD Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar confirmed that the ongoing spell is due to the influence of two weather systems, a low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and another developing over the Bay of Bengal. These twin systems are currently impacting rainfall patterns in the state’s northern, interior, and coastal belts.
Recent Showers Recorded Across North Odisha
According to the IMD’s mid-day bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall has already occurred in the past 24 hours in districts, including Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj, Angul, and Balasore. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds have also been reported.
For Wednesday, rainfall is expected to continue in both interior and coastal districts. The Yellow Warning remains in effect for the same five districts, with additional thunderstorm alerts in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.
While widespread rain is expected to persist through the week, IMD projections indicate a likely decrease in intensity after July 17, as the low-pressure systems begin to weaken. Intermittent showers, however, may continue in isolated pockets of southern and northern Odisha.
