Odisha is grappling with unusually high temperatures this January, foremost in the Koraput district, where the mercury has reached an unprecedented 33.2 Degrees Celsius, official sources said on Thursday.
This marks the highest January temperature recorded in the past 52 years, according to meteorologist Umashankar Das, raising concerns among the local populace.

According to the sources, Odisha typically experiences cooler months leading into March, yet this year, residents have resorted to using fans much earlier than usual. Bhubaneswar has been noticeably warmer as well, with morning temperatures reported at 19 Degrees Celsius on January 23 (today) compared to 15 Degrees on January 20. Jharsuguda has also seen a significant change, with temperatures rising from 9.6 Degrees Celsius to 13.2 Degrees in just three days.
The coastal areas of Odisha and the Bay of Bengal are currently impacted by an anti-cyclonic system, which is introducing moist winds into the region, thereby elevating temperatures. These climatic conditions are exacerbated by incoming warm southwestern winds, further contributing to the prevalent heat.
Meteorologists predict a further increase of two to four Degrees Celsius over the next three days, signalling more discomfort ahead for Odisha’s residents.

“No significant synoptic system lies in the region. Dry weather prevailed over the districts of Odisha. Minimum (night) temperature observed marked rise at one or two places over the districts of North Coastal Odisha, appreciable rise at one or two places over the districts of Coastal Odisha and South Interior Odisha and no large change elsewhere over the districts of Odisha,” the senior meteorologist Das said.
“The Minimum (night) temperature is likely to rise by 2 DegC to 4 DegC during the next three days and no large change during subsequent two days over the districts of Odisha,” Das added.
