A major railway accident was averted on Friday as a freight train carrying limestone derailed near the Upper Market area of Biramitrapur in Sundargarh district. The mishap occurred while the train was heading towards Biramitrapur railway station from Chuna Bhata.
According to preliminary reports, the train was loaded with dolomite stones of BSL Company and suddenly went off-track, resulting in the derailment of 11 wagons.
The incident took place in a semi-residential area near the Upper Market zone, raising concerns over public safety. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or loss of life.
Preliminary reports suggest that the derailment may have been caused by a track alignment issue or mechanical failure, though railway officials have not confirmed the exact cause. A high-level inquiry has been initiated, and senior railway officials have rushed to the site for assessment.
Emergency response teams, including railway maintenance staff and security personnel, arrived promptly to secure the area and begin restoration work. Heavy machinery has been deployed to lift the derailed wagons and clear the tracks.
Train movement on nearby routes has been temporarily affected, and efforts are being made to resume normal operations at the earliest, informed an official.
Local residents gathered near the site in large numbers, but police were deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any obstruction to the recovery process.
