A +2 girl student was found hanging in the hostel of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The deceased, Utkalika Swain allegedly hanged herself to death from the ceiling fan of her hostel room using her stole, sources said.
The incident came to light after other hostel inmates and friends of the deceased found no response from inside her locked hostel room for several hours. They subsequently informed the warden, who broke open the door and found the girl hanging from the ceiling.
Meanwhile, authorities from the Capital Police Station reached the spot and retrieved the body. While no suicide note was found, police seized the deceased’s mobile phone to search for signs and clues and ascertain any foul play.
“We have interacted with the deceased’s local guardian and recorded the statements of the hostel warden. A phone was found and will be used to aid in our probe. Additional details regarding the cause of death will be known after the post-mortem,” stated Capital Police Station IIC.

Sources also added that Swain was an Odissi dancer and regularly participated in local and international events. Further, they dismissed noticing any signs of depression or mental pressure.
“Utkalika was a very good dancer and a well-mannered student. She had recently performed Odissi at an international level fest and was very happy about it,” stated one of the girl’s teachers. However, he noted that she used to frequently faint while performing and had to be admitted to the hospital in a few instances in the past.

Till the last reports, no signs of foul play had been reported and a police investigation was underway.
