In a rare incident, villagers in the Bangiriposhi forest region of Mayurbhanj district stumbled upon a massive python while out fishing. The reptile, measuring nearly 8 feet in length and weighing around 30–40 kilograms, was rescued and later released back into the wild by forest officials.
According to sources, the incident took place near Anlatada village under Rajaloka Gram Panchayat. Villagers had set up a bamboo fish trap in the nearby water streams.
Due to the recent spell of heavy rains, the water current in the area had intensified. It is suspected that the python was washed down from the upper reaches of the forest and became stuck in the trap meant for fish.
Alarmed by the unexpected sight, the villagers quickly informed the Forest Department. A team of officials arrived at the location, carefully rescued the snake, and ensured its safe release into the forest.
The unusual rescue created a buzz in the area, drawing many curious locals to witness the scene. Forest officials praised the villagers for their timely action in alerting authorities instead of attempting to harm the animal.
The incident once again highlighted the close interactions between humans and wildlife in Odisha’s forested regions, especially during the monsoon season.
