The Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has welcomed a new member to its animal family with the birth of a Gaur (Bos gaurus) calf on July 9 at 5:25 PM. The birth took place in Enclosure No. 42, bringing joy to the zoo authorities and conservationists alike.

Second Birth in Just Over a Year

This is the second Gaur birth at the zoo in a little over a year—the last calf was born on June 5, 2024. Both parents of the newborn were also born at Nandankanan, highlighting the success of the zoo’s breeding program. The mating of the pair was observed in November 2024.

With this addition, the total Gaur population at Nandankanan has risen to seven, comprising three males, three females, and one calf.

A Keystone Species in Focus

The Gaur, the largest species of wild cattle, is renowned for its impressive muscular build, distinct convex forehead ridge, and light-colored “stocking” markings on its legs. As a mega-herbivore, it plays a crucial role in sustaining forest ecosystems by influencing vegetation dynamics.

National Conservation Efforts

Protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Gaur is considered a priority species under the Conservation Breeding Programme of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), New Delhi. The program is coordinated by Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru, with Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park and Goa’s Bondla Zoo as partners.

This successful birth marks another step forward in the collective efforts of 19 Indian zoos working to ensure the ex-situ conservation and long-term survival of the species.
