According to sources, a protest staged by members of the Christian Manch took a serious turn in Malkangiri yesterday, as some demonstrators allegedly misbehaved with the IIC of Malkangiri Model Police Station, Rigan Kindo. In a symbolic act of protest, the agitators tried to forcefully garland him, an act widely viewed as a form of public humiliation.

Yesterday’s protest saw participation from several local leaders, including senior Congress leader Manas Choudhury. Protesters handed over a memorandum to the District Collector, but tensions escalated near the collector's office as tempers flared between demonstrators and police personnel.

In the course of this confrontation, Manas Choudhury had allegedly attempted to garland the police officer forcibly. Following the incident, Malkangiri Police registered an atrocity case against 26 individuals, including Choudhury.

Officials stated that the situation is under control, and a further probe is underway.

No comments were received from the protestors or local police in this regard.

It is pertinent to mention here that the demonstration was triggered by an incident on June 21 this year at Katamate locality, where nearly 30 individuals were reportedly injured in an attack by miscreants.

Protesters accused police of inaction despite formal complaints and had organised a march demanding accountability.
