The death toll in Chikiti hooch tragedy in Ganjam district roe to four after one more patient died while undergoing treatment at MKCG hospital in Berhampur on Sunday.

Another patient had passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Saturday.

As many as three other affected persons are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Notably, at least 15 persons from Moundpur, Jenapur and Karabalua village of Chikiti block in Ganjam district had consumed country liquor from a local unlicensed shop and were rushed to the hospital after their condition deteriorated.

Following the incident, the Odisha government swung into action and intensified raids in Bhubaneswar and other parts of the State on illegal liquor units.

Berhampur Excise Superintendent Pradip Panigrahi was suspended and two other officials were transferred following the spurious liquor tragedy.
