In a recent decision under the PM POSHAN Scheme, students who do not consume eggs in schools in Odisha will now be provided with fruits as an alternative.
The move aims to ensure that all children receive adequate nutrition, irrespective of their dietary preferences. It includes flexibility in meal planning to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions.
On days when eggs are served as part of the midday meal, students who opt out of consuming eggs will be given fruits instead. This decision will be applicable to all students from pre-primary (Shishu Vatika) up to Class 10.
To implement this decision effectively, the PM POSHAN State Nodal Officer has issued instructions through official letters to all District Education Officers across the state.

As per sources, fruits offer essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are important for a child's growth and development. Providing a range of fruits can help ensure students receive a variety of nutrients, even if they avoid certain food items like eggs. PM POSHAN guidelines emphasize a balanced diet, and fruits can be incorporated to meet the required calorie and protein norms.
