Four arrested in Bhubaneswar taxi driver's death case

The arrested persons are from Gajapati district, and there is a possibility of more arrests in the case.

Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh on Monday confirmed the arrest of as many as four individuals from the capital city's Chandaka area in connection with the death of taxi driver Bidyadhara Sahoo. 

The arrested persons are from Gajapati district, and there is a possibility of more arrests in the case, sources informed. 

The four accused had allegedly demanded money and documents from Bidyadhara under charges of abduction and instigating suicide. When Bidyadhara refused to comply, he was reportedly abducted on the 16th of the month.

"Taxi driver Bidyadhara Sahoo's body was found on the Baranga-Pitapalli road under Chandaka Police Station on September 20. A man missing report was filed in Badagada police station at 2.12 pm on September 19 by late Bidyadhara's wife, Mamina Thatua. Following an investigation, Bidyadhara's body was recovered. As many as four accused in connection with the incident have been arrested so far. Some more accused will possibly be arrested. The arrested accused are from the Gajapati district," said Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh.

"As per the investigation so far, the accused contacted Bidyadhara to return their documents and the money they had allegedly provided him. As per their allegation, Bidyadhara had collected the documents and money from them by promising them to provide jobs. The accused took Bidyadhara to Jajpur on September 15 and pressurized him to return their documents and money. Subsequently, they called Bidyadhara's wife and she returned the document bag on September 17. However, the documents of the accused were not available on the bag. When they continued to pressurise Bidyadhara, he committed suicide under the custody of the abductors. Following the suicide, the accused brought the body to Chandaka and tried to hang it in a tree. Our scientific team had earlier indicated about it. Now, further details will be revealed after the post-mortem report. Bidyadhar actually committed suicide at 7am in Jajpur. When the accused were trying to give it the colour of a suicide case, some of them got a call from the police station. After getting the phone call, the accused ran away from the place. The accused, who had received the call, arrived at the police station. When he was questioned, he gave a detailed account, and the other accused were arrested. A total of four accused have been arrested so far. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway," he added.
