In a surprise political move, Sunita Biswal, the daughter of former Odisha CM Hemananda Biswal, resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday. She informed BJD chief and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik through a formal letter, stepping down from the party's primary membership.

In her resignation letter, Sunita expressed, “I am writing to inform you that, due to personal reasons, I have decided to resign from my primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal. It has been an honour and privilege to be a part of this esteemed organisation for over six years, and l am grateful for the opportunities I had to serve the people of Odisha.”

“During my tenure, I have worked tirelessly to uphold the party's ideals and contribute to the welfare of our State. I appreciate the trust and support extended to me by the party leadership and fellow members. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you and the entire party organisation for providing me with such a platform to serve the people of Odisha,” Sunita mentioned.

Sunita was prominently featured in the 2019 General Elections as the BJD candidate for the Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat, although she did not win. Her candidature was seen as a strategic alliance move by the party to consolidate tribal and western Odisha votes, given her father’s legacy in the region.

While she has not disclosed her reasons for the resignation in her public domain yet, her exit could have implications for the party's positioning in western Odisha, especially among the tribal electorate.

Political analysts speculate whether this move signals her future alignment with another political party or a temporary withdrawal from active politics.
