The Odisha Police have launched an investigation into allegations of cyber harassment linked to the recent death of a female student in Balasore’s Fakir Mohan College. The inquiry was initiated following a complaint filed by the student’s brother at Bhograi Police Station.

In his complaint, the bereaved brother expressed anguish over “unfortunate and unbearable” derogatory remarks made about their family on social media platforms. He alleged that certain individuals were attempting to exploit the tragedy for political gains and named four people in connection with the defamatory content.

“On social media, people are making derogatory remarks and posting filthy posts and comments. In our bad times, we are being made to bear this unnecessary trolling and abuse online. So, I have sought the help of police and administration and lodged an FIR against some people,” informed the victim’s brother.

Confirming receipt of the complaint, local police authorities stated that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. “We are examining all aspects of the allegations and will take appropriate action to ensure justice and prevent the spread of defamatory content online,” said a police spokesperson.

The tragic death of the student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College has already sparked statewide outrage, leading to protests and a 12-hour Odisha bandh called by Opposition parties.
