The political unrest in Odisha is showing no signs of slowing down as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday observed a Balasore bandh in protest over the tragic death of a second-year B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College.
The student had succumbed to severe burn injuries after allegedly being driven to suicide due to inaction on her harassment complaint.
The bandh, which began at 6 AM, is set to continue till 2 PM, with normal life in the town being brought to a near standstill.
BJD workers took to the streets early in the morning, staging demonstrations at key junctions. Holding placards and posters, they raised slogans demanding justice and a judicial inquiry into the incident.
Shops, markets, government offices, and private establishments remained shut while vehicular movement across Balasore was severely affected.
The BJD has intensified its agitation, holding the state government responsible for what they term a ‘complete failure of the system.’
Meanwhile in Bhubaneswar, the Opposition party is set to gherao Lok Seva Bhawan today. In view of the protest, the Home Department has instructed all Lok Seva Bhawan staff to reach office by 9:30 AM, and the main gate will be closed thereafter.
Special Secretary R.K. Sharma has written to all departmental Principal Secretaries to inform them of the directive. Enhanced security arrangements have also been made at Lok Seva Bhawan, Kharavela Bhawan, Rajiv Bhawan, and Krushi Bhawan.
