The health condition of the girl student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who attempted self-immolation allegedly due to sustained harassment and intimidation, remains critical at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Medical authorities have described the next 48 hours as vital, with the student showing no signs of recovery since being admitted.
Severe Burns and Organ Damage Complicate Recovery
According to AIIMS Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, the victim has sustained between 90 to 95 percent burn injuries, many of which are deep and have caused serious internal damage.
She has suffered injuries to vital organs, including her kidneys, and remains on advanced life support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“About 95% of the victim’s body has suffered severe burn injuries. Her internal organs have taken extreme damage, and she is currently on critical care support. Her kidneys have been affected. After another 24-48 hours, we may have a better assessment of her health condition,” informed the director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
He also added that medical teams comprising specialists from critical care, surgery, nephrology, and pulmonology are monitoring her around the clock.
However, her respiratory system and renal function have been severely compromised due to the intensity of the burns. The damage from fire-related inhalation has further complicated her condition.
Given the gravity of her health status, doctors have ruled out the possibility of airlifting her to any other facility. The AIIMS administration has confirmed that they are administering every possible intervention, but described her survival chances as extremely slim unless she shows improvement within the next two days.
No Signs of Improvement Since Admission
Despite being under the care of a 12-member team of doctors, hospital sources have indicated that her condition has not improved since she arrived at AIIMS. She was shifted from Balasore District Headquarters Hospital shortly after the incident, with emergency resuscitative care initiated en route. Since then, doctors have struggled to stabilise her vitals.
Hospital authorities say the extensive damage to the skin, respiratory tract, and internal organs poses life-threatening complications, including infection and organ failure.
Measures are being taken to prevent sepsis and to maintain organ function artificially as long as possible.
"The condition is not so good. It is critical. The patient is intubated, and that’s why she has been alive till now. These are deep burns, and it is hard to assess her internal injuries. She is on a ventilator. The patient is alive. All state-of-the-art facilities are being offered to her,” said a doctor treating the victim at AIIMS.
