Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across the Koida region of Sundargarh district, causing severe disruption in several areas. Continuous rainfall under a low-pressure system has persisted for three days, triggering fears of worsening floods.

Nearly two feet of rainwater was seen flowing over the Soyamba bridge under the jurisdiction of Koida police station. As a result, all communication between Soyamba panchayat and Relhatu panchayat has been completely cut off. With a strong current flowing over the bridge, the administration has prohibited public movement across it.

Following three days of continuous low-pressure rainfall, the forest belt of Sundargarh lies battered. Persistent showers in the upper catchment have caused the Brahmani river to swell rapidly, posing a growing threat to villages situated along its banks if the downpour continues.

A local resident described the unfolding situation and said, “We’ve come here to see the flood. Earlier, the river’s water level had risen, submerging the riverbanks on both sides. Areas near the river like Lalei, Tanjoda, and other low-lying regions, suffer every year during the floods. The floodwater enters these places annually, damaging homes and properties. The Siajod bridge near Banei is currently submerged and is notorious for the number of accidents that occur during this season. We often hear reports of vehicles being swept away in heavy floodwaters. This year too, a similar situation has persisted for over two weeks."

Authorities remain on alert as forecasts predict rainfall in the coming days. Locals have been advised to avoid travelling through submerged routes and take necessary precautions.
