In a stern move aimed at ensuring discipline and accountability within the police force, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Balasore has suspended five police personnel — one havildar and four constables — on charges of dereliction of duty. The decision comes in the wake of internal reports indicating negligence in the discharge of their official responsibilities.
According to official sources, the suspended officers were assigned to duty at the official residence of the Balasore District Collector. They were entrusted with maintaining law and order, ensuring the security of the premises, and supporting administrative functions.
However, a recent departmental review revealed that the officers in question had failed to uphold the standards expected of them, displaying a lack of seriousness and diligence in their assigned roles.
Sources said that the suspended police personnel had neglected their assigned duties by attending a birthday celebration of their colleague some three days back. It is also alleged that they were also indulged in some illegal activities.
Taking cognizance of these lapses, the SP initiated immediate disciplinary action and ordered their suspension. The action is seen as part of a broader effort to enforce accountability and set an example for others in the force.
“No one is above duty, especially when deployed at sensitive government installations. Laxity will not be tolerated,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.
Sources suggest that the disciplinary measures were prompted by repeated complaints and surveillance inputs pointing to unprofessional conduct and inattentiveness while on duty. While the exact nature of the misconduct has not been publicly detailed, the suspension is expected to send a strong message within the ranks.
An internal inquiry has been launched to further probe the extent of negligence and whether it had any wider implications. Depending on the outcome, further administrative or legal action may be taken against the suspended personnel.
This development reflects the Odisha Police Department’s ongoing commitment to improving professionalism and public trust, especially in an era when the conduct of law enforcement is under increasing public scrutiny.
