A massive fire broke out late on Friday night at a saree store in Udala market of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, reducing the entire shop to ashes and destroying goods worth over Rs 70 lakh. The incident reportedly took place around 3 am and continued for several hours before being brought under control.
Smoke Spotted By Night Guard, Fire Department Alerted
According to reports, the fire broke out suddenly inside the saree shop. A night watchman noticed thick smoke coming from behind the shutter and immediately alerted both the shop owner and the fire department. Fire personnel from Udala rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze after a strenuous operation lasting nearly four hours.
Short Circuit As Probable Cause Of Fire
Laxmi Narayan Parida, owner of the gutted shop, said, “We closed the shop the same way we always do. Then, at around 3 am, we received a call from the security about smoke coming from behind the shutter. We rushed to the spot to find the fire department already present and attempting to extinguish the fire. Items worth nearly Rs 80 lakh were destroyed. The cause of the fire appears to be a short circuit in the wiring.”
Eyewitness Account Of The Early Morning Chaos
An eyewitness shared, “We reached the spot and saw that the fire department personnel were struggling to bring the flames under control. It took nearly four hours, and by the time the fire was doused, it was already morning. All the stock, including sarees and dhotis, was completely gutted.”
Though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, authorities suspect a short circuit to be the reason.
