Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi tabled a demand for over Rs 12.59 Lakh Crore during the meeting of the 16th Finance Commission with senior State government officials in Bhubaneswar, on Thursday.

The proposals aimed at addressing the financial requirements for the State's five-year developmental plan spanning 2026 to 2031.

The CM advocated for an entire central funding commitment to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), which currently sees 75 per cent footing by the Central government and the remaining 25 per cent by the State. Given Odisha's susceptibility to frequent natural disasters, the CM urged the Central government to shoulder the full contribution.

“Sixteenth Finance Commission is on a four-day visit to Odisha (from February 4 to February 7). The Commission will review our financial standing, growth, and developmental works. A roadmap has been prepared to take Odisha forward on the path of development, which will be reflected through the next Five-Year Plan spanning from 2026 to 2031,” the CM said.

“We are hopeful that we will get more financial assistance from the Central government than previous Five-Year Plans and certainly will become a growth engine in the making of Viksit Bharat, as dreamt by Prime Minister Modi Ji. In our proposal, we have focused on urbanisation, agriculture and rural development,” the CM stated in a presser.

Moreover, the CM proposed that the share of taxes designated to states should be elevated from the existing 41 per cent to 50 per cent. This new allocation would increase Odisha’s share from 4.528 per cent to 4.964 per cent, a change that could provide a meaningful impetus to the region's economic progress.
