A land dispute turned tragic in Bolangir district after an elderly man succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted by his nephew and associates. The deceased has been identified as Shobhakar Bhati of Parlimala village under Belpada police limits.
According to sources, on August 2, accused Hruda Bhati, along with two accomplices, allegedly launched a brutal attack on Shobhakar over a long-standing property dispute.
The victim, left critically injured, was rushed to Burla Medical College and Hospital, where he remained under treatment for several days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, family members alleged.
“They came and assaulted my husband over a land dispute. He thrashed him black and blue. He was rushed to the hospital, but died during treatment,” alleged Surubali Bhati, the deceased’s wife.
Following the complaint, Belpada police registered a case and launched an investigation.
While one accused has been detained from a nearby forest, the two others are currently absconding. Police officials confirmed that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend them.
Meanwhile, the deceased's body has been sent for a post-mortem, and later it will be handed over to the family.
