Fakir Mohan University, commonly known as FM University, located in Odisha’s Balasore, has made a significant move towards controlling pollution and promoting environmental sustainability. In a bid to make the campus completely pollution-free, the university has implemented a ban on smoke-emitting motor vehicles and plastic use. Additionally, students of the university have started preparing organic fertilizers from waste materials that have been removed from the campus.
Steps Taken By FM University:
Environmental pollution is a growing concern worldwide, and the University is taking proactive measures to address it. According to reports, students from the university's Department of Environmental Science have taken the initiative to create organic fertilizers. Using a new technique, they are converting waste materials, such as paper bags, dry leaves fallen from trees, discarded clothes, and other waste, into organic fertilizers. In addition, bio-fertilizers are also being prepared, contributing further to the university's efforts to promote sustainability.
Faculty And Students Shed Light On Their Achievements:
Talking about the efforts of the Environmental Science department, Dibyanshu Pradhan, a student of the dept said, “Fakir Mohan University has launched a programme called “Waste to Wealth” through which we have been successfully producing bio-fertilizer and vermicompost. The waste from the University’s hostels and guest house is used to convert into wealth by us.”

Environmental Science HoD, Prakash Chandra Mishra said, “Under the supervision of our University’s Vice Chancellor Santosh Kumar Tripathy, the entire campus has become plastic-free. The organic fertilizers produced by us is used in the farming done by the institution.”
Other Steps Taken By FM University To Tackle Pollution:
The university’s initiative goes beyond just waste management. Fakir Mohan University has also banned the entry of petrol or diesel-powered vehicles within the campus for over a year. To meet transportation needs, battery-operated autorickshaws have been introduced, further reducing pollution.

Sayam Shree Patnaik, a student at FM University said, “In a city like Balasore, where pollution levels are high, the step taken by the Vice Chancellor to control pollution is highly appreciated.”
Another student praised the step induced by the University and said, “It is essential for the world to remain pollution-free in order to survive. Even if I bring my vehicle to the University, I park it outside and walk through the campus. Definitely, this step is really remarkable to bring change to the society.”
Kukumina Das, FM University Registrar said, “Our institution has received widespread recognition for its efforts in pollution control. We have implemented a ban on petrol and diesel vehicles within the campus and carried out extensive tree plantation, transforming the campus into a 'Green Campus.' Every individual here is committed to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment to the best of their ability.”
