Owing a flat or house is a dream of many individuals. However, there are a lot of people who fail to get their dream house despite making necessary payments to builders or construction companies. In one such case, an apartment owner has been directed by a consumer court to return Rs 30 lakh to a person who had booked a unit. The matter has been reported from Jeypore in Koraput district.

As per reports, the apartment owner Jogindra Sai has been directed to pay the amount to the consumer K Suman of Nehru within a month. The complainant K Suman had moved the consumer court after the concerned apartment owner allegedly failed to hand over the unit within the stipulated time frame. The complainant had paid the apartment owner around Rs 20 lakh in 2020, but he was yet to get the possession of the unit, source said.

“I had paid around Rs 20 lakh in 2020 and the construction work of the building started in 2017. The house was not fully completed even though I was supposed to get it by December 2022. I was only given assurance to hand over the unit at the earliest,” alleged the complainant.

Citing Covid pandemic, the apartment owner was delaying to complete the necessary formalities as per the agreement. It was in 2023 that the complainant moved the consumer court seeking justice.

Hearing the matter, the consumer court has directed the owner to pay Rs 20 lakh at an interest of 6 percent and Rs 5 lakh as compensation and Rs 1 lakh as rent and other expenses to the complainant. Moreover, the court has also directed for collection of money at 12 percent interest if the apartment owner fails to pay within 30 days of the date of passing of the judgement.

Meanwhile, the concerned apartment owner could not be contacted over the allegations.
