After a long gap, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) started its eviction drive in slum areas on Friday. Tension prevailed at the Bramhapur slum near the High Court museum in Cuttack as the authorities of the CMC undertook an eviction drive. The land illegally occupied by people is said to be of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

The slum dwellers strongly opposed the drive without any rehabilitation plan. An elderly woman said, “We were driven out of the place. But the government did not ensure any rehabilitation for us. If rehabilitation is not made immediately for us, we will again come back to the place to settle under polythene roofs.”

Deputy commissioner of the CMC, Ajay Kumar Das said that the land where the people had illegally settled belongs to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). After the eviction, the land will be handed over to the ASI authorities, he said, adding that the evicted people will be provided flats.

“If anybody refuses to take flats, we will allot them land under Jaga Mission. A majority of people are willing to take flats” he added.

Das also added that the land will be allocated to the beneficiaries near Dhabaleswargada in Sector 13 and some people are keen to take land. There are about 155 identified slum dwellers.
