Panic gripped parts of Keonjhar on Saturday after an elephant strayed into a human settlement from the nearby Daitari forest. The tusker was first spotted in Brahmanipal market early in the morning and later seen moving through the Tata colony, startling residents. On seeing the elephant, locals ran for safety, while the animal itself roamed restlessly across several areas.
According to reports, the elephant had entered the settlement in search of food. Its sudden presence in crowded places caused alarm among the local population. However, Forest Department officials quickly reached the spot and ensured the safety of both the animal and the residents. No casualties or damage to property were reported during the episode.

A rescue operation was initiated, with efforts focused on guiding the elephant across the Kushei river and back into the forest. The operation was eventually successful, and the animal was safely driven away.

Elephants have long inhabited the Daitari forest region, and the Forest Department maintains regular deployments to prevent incidents of human-elephant conflict. Officials also conduct awareness drives among villagers to reduce risks and promote safe practices when elephants appear in settlements.
Locals Cooperate With Forest Officials
During the latest incident, locals extended their full cooperation to forest staff. Following guidance, they refrained from standing in front of the animal and instead maintained a safe distance while assisting in driving it back towards the jungle.

Forest officials noted that the community’s cautious response played a crucial role in avoiding any untoward situation. The successful operation once again highlighted the growing awareness among residents about the importance of peaceful coexistence with wildlife.
