Odisha Police have implemented an independent drone surveillance system to ensure smooth traffic and crowd management during the Bahuda Yatra in Puri.
According to officials, the system is being monitored and operated from the central traffic control room, where various police personnel are stationed to observe live visuals and coordinate with field officers.
Drone and CCTV Coverage Across Key Routes
The surveillance setup includes drones and CCTV cameras installed from Bhubaneswar's Uttara Square to the Puri entry point, as well as multiple locations within Puri town. Officers in the control room are tasked with monitoring these visuals and relaying real-time updates to concerned officials on the ground to facilitate timely crowd control and movement regulation.
Wide Aerial Reach of Drone
The drone, capable of capturing visuals from Puri's entrance up to Malatipatpur, a distance of approximately 7–8 kilometres, is expected to cover a significant area during the return procession of the deities. Based on the footage received, information regarding possible traffic jams and other disruptions will be communicated to officials for immediate action.
Integrated With Parking and Emergency Systems
Sources said the arrangements have been made in coordination with over 20 designated parking areas set up for the occasion. In addition to traffic monitoring, drone surveillance will also assist in responding to emergency calls. Officials confirmed that any ambulance request received via VHF will be swiftly addressed, with efforts made to ensure clear passage through congested routes.
Multi-Department Coordination Ensured
Puri representative Madhusudan Mishra stated that all departments involved are working in coordination to manage the large influx of devotees and ensure safety during the yatra. The drone system is expected to significantly enhance situational awareness and response efficiency throughout the event.
