The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 49,800 Dubai-origin cigarette sticks being smuggled into the city on Saturday. The consignment was intercepted during transit near the capital, with one person reportedly carrying the goods.

The seized cigarettes, valued in lakhs of rupees, were allegedly trafficked illegally from Dubai to Bhubaneswar.

Officials said the DRI is working in close coordination with local police and other enforcement agencies to trace the buyers and distributors behind the racket. Investigators are also probing whether the consignment is linked to a larger smuggling network. Authorities assured that all those involved will be brought to justice.

This seizure comes amid growing concern over the influx of contraband and narcotics from international sources into Odisha. Enforcement agencies have reiterated stern warnings, stressing that strict action will be taken against anyone engaged in the unlawful import and distribution of such goods.

In a related development, the Customs Department recently confiscated hydroponic marijuana valued at over Rs 30 crore from Biju Patnaik International Airport. The seizure, reported on 29 July, involved six bags containing the high-grade contraband, commonly referred to as ‘hydroponic weed’, which had arrived on a flight from Bangkok. The sophisticated cultivation method used for this marijuana makes it particularly potent and sought-after in illicit markets.
